Melbourne Demons captain Max Gawn has been unveiled as an ambassador for the 2027 TAC People’s Ride. He joined Tour de France champion Cadel Evans in a darkened South Yarra spin studio to show off the reflective technology built into this year’s rider jersey.

The nine-time All-Australian, Cadel and SBS commentator Matt Keenan rode with the lights down at Bodhi & Ride. The session showed how the 2027 TAC People’s Ride jersey helps riders stand out in low light. Every rider receives the jersey as part of their registration.

A familiar face on the bike

Gawn has ridden the TAC People’s Ride for many years and is a former ambassador for the race’s GeelongPort Family Ride. Off the footy field, he co-hosts the weekly cycling podcast Stanley St. Social with WorldTour professional Luke Plapp and Alex Clements.

He has also taken on some of the toughest challenges in the sport. He “Everested” South Australia’s Willunga Hill, riding the 3.7km climb 39.5 times in around 21 hours. He also raced 350km across the Saudi Arabian desert on a mountain bike.

“I’ve ridden the TAC People’s Ride for years and it’s one of my favourite days on the bike. You’ve got first-timers riding alongside people who’ve done it every time, and everyone’s there for the same reason. If I can help get a few more people out and active on the bike while thinking about how to ride safely, that’s a pretty good role to have.”

Be seen, stay safe

Gawn said the reflective jersey was a simple message to everyone who shares the road.

“Being seen is one of the most important things you can do to stay safe on the bike. Whether you’re heading out before work or riding home as the light fades, having visible cycling kit and effective lights makes a real difference, and drivers notice it.”

Race namesake Cadel Evans said Gawn’s passion for cycling made him a natural fit.

“Max genuinely loves riding, and people can see that. The TAC People’s Ride is about bringing everyone into the sport, and safety is a big part of that. Riding in the dark today showed just how much difference the right gear can make.”

“Every TAC People’s Ride participant receives this jersey with their registration, so it’s not just about one day in January. Putting reflective technology into the hands of thousands of riders is a practical step that will keep people safer on our roads long after race day.”
